Learn

  1. Definition:
    1. 1828: To gain knowledge of; to acquire knowledge or ideas of something before unknown. We learn the use of letters, the meaning of words and the principles of science. We learn things by instruction, by study, and by experience and observation. It is much easier to learn what is right, than to unlearn what is wrong.
      1. Knowledge (capacity)
      2. Instruction (education)
      3. Study (investigate)
        1. The process of learning is the process of increasing one's capacity to understand a concept through hard work and investment (or investigation)
  2. Quotes:
    1. “The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you'll go.” (Dr. Seuss)
      1. You can’t learn something from nothing. Work and new energy must be exerted in order for learning to occur. When it does occur, your capacity to influence the world increases.
    2. “I am always doing that which I cannot do, in order that I may learn how to do it.” (Pablo Picasso)
      1. That’s the principle, action brings knowledge. Confucius said that there were three ways one can learn wisdom; through reflection, through imitation, and through experience.
  3. Scriptures:
    1. “And as all have not faith, seek ye diligently and teach one another words of wisdom; yea, seek ye out of the best books words of wisdom; seek learning, even by study and also by faith.” (Doctrine and Covenants 88:118, italics added)
      1. Seek-it requires action. Teach-it does too. Learning is meant to be an active, not a passive process. The best places to look for true learning is by honest study and by faith in the God who can teach all things.
  4. Personal Definition:

Learning is something you have to work for. To learn something is to exert your mind to understand something, that you might, through study or faith, grow your capacity till you hold that concept within your mind. Like a muscle, it must be stretched before it can grow.

Loyal

  1. Definition
    1. 1828: Faithful to a prince or superior; true to plighted faith, duty or love; not treacherous; used of subjects to their prince, and of husband, wife and lovers; as a loyal subject; a loyal wife.
      1. Faithful (trustworthy)
      2. True (steadfast)
      3. Love (devotion)
        1. To be loyal to someone or something is to really love them, with a Christlike love, if you’re loyal you are someone that others can trust.
  2. Quotes From Prophets
    1. “When one is loyal to the truth, we say he is a person of integrity. When one is loyal to the truth under intense opposition, we say he is a person of great integrity. Integrity is a quality or state of being of sound moral principle. Integrity is uprightness, honesty, and sincerity—yes, all that and even more.” (ROYDEN G. DERRICK, General Conference, October 1984)
      1. Being loyal is also a way to prove yourself, if you are loyal at all times God will see you a person whom he can trust with all his works.
    2. “Each one who comes to us must find us ever...Loyal... if [this virtue] glows brightly in our hearts, the fire cannot fail to be kindled in theirs”  (ALLOWAT SAKIMA, Pre-Ordeal)
      1. By being loyal you become someone who stands out in a crowd, people enjoy this persons company. But remember, it says always loyal (Semper Fi) not just towards certain people whose respect you want more than others. Everyone.
  3. Scriptures
    1. His lord said unto him, Well done, thou good and faithful servant: thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things: enter thou into the joy of thy lord. (Matthew 25: 21)
      1. The definition states to be faithful to a superior. If we are faithful and the few things (and people) that God gives us than we will be lifted up at the last day.
  4. Personal Definition
I wrote this one because I play Allowat Sakima and wanted to more thoroughly understand him. Loyalty is great, it is one of if not the greatest of a scouts obligations. In this life we are given opportunities to help others that are placed in our way. If we are firm in our commitment to serve others, if we are loyal to our superior who placed us in that situation, then we can and will be given more opportunities to aid his children because he knows he can trust us with his children.

Love

  1. Definition:
    1. 1828: In a general sense to be pleased with; to regard with affection, on account of some qualities which excite pleasing sensations or desire of gratification.
      1. Pleased (happy)
      2. Affection (tenderness)
      3. Sensations (passion)
        1. Love is to experience a passion (be it good or no) which excites your mind, and makes you “happy”.
  2. Quotes from Prophets:
    1. “The full and essential nature of love we may not understand” (Elder John A. Widtsoe)
      1. Love can be described in many ways. But what he says here is that the true meaning of love is so far above our mortal state that we can not comprehend it.
    2. Love is a positive active force. It helps the loved one. If there is need, love tries to supply it. If there is weakness, love supplants it with strength. … Love that does not help is a faked or transient love.” (Elder John A. Widtsoe)
      1. Love is not a noun. Or at least it shouldn’t be. It is an action. A verb, akin to Charity. When you love someone, you serve them. That is the pure love of Christ.
  3. Scriptures:
    1. “And I am filled with charity, which is everlasting love; wherefore, all children are alike unto me; wherefore, I love little children with a perfect love; and they are all alike and partakers of salvation.” (Moroni 8:17)
      1. Once again, Charity is the total and everlasting Love. Children show this love very well.
    2. “A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another.” (John 13:34)
      1. To love each other is a commandment of God. The love we are talking about is the true love, charity.
  4. Personal Definition:
Love is service. Charity is love. True, Christlike love brings joy and happiness. The way to show love is to treat others as you would like to be treated. By selfless service.

Legality

  1. Definition
    1. 1828: Lawfulness; conformity to law. In theology, a reliance on works for salvation.
      1. Lawfulness (legitimacy)
      2. Conformity (conventionality)
      3. Reliance (faith)
    2. Legality is submitting yourself to the wills of those above you. Be they governments of men or of heaven.
  2. Quotes from Prophets
    1. “The solution to this problem ultimately is neither governmental nor institutional. Nor is it a question of legality. It is a matter of individual choice and commitment. Agency must be understood. The importance of the will in making crucial choices must be known. Then steps toward relief can follow.” (RUSSELL M. NELSON General Conference, October 1988)
      1. Used in this context, legality is the issue of whether or not something is “legal”.
    2. Faith exists when absolute confidence in that which we cannot see combines with action that is in absolute conformity to the will of our Heavenly Father. Without all three—first, absolute confidence; second, action; and third, absolute conformity—without these three all we have is a counterfeit, a weak and watered-down faith.” (JOSEPH B. WIRTHLIN, General Conference, October 2002)
      1. Conformity, is to accept the will of those above you. It is essential to having faith.
  3. Scriptures
    1. And now as I said concerning faithfaith is not to have a perfect knowledge of things; therefore if ye have faith ye hope for things which are not seen, which are true. (Alma 32:21)
      1. Faith is the result of conformity, as seen above. Therefore faith is the result of following the legality of God.
  4. Personal Definition
The legality of God is found by conforming to his law. Conformity is a fundamental step in building faith in Christ. By following the state, we can have our life based in the wrong places.
