Enormity

  1. Definition
    1. 1828: Literally, the transgression of a rule, or deviation from right. Hence, any wrong, irregular, vicious or sinful act, either in government or morals.
      1. Transgression (offense)
      2. Deviation (digression)
    2. Enormity is something you do that does not comply with the rules
  2. Quotes from Prophets
    1. “Judas then stood by and, realizing the enormity of what he had done, took the only escape out to sacrifice himself. And Jesus could only explain that of the Twelve, meaning Judas, he had a devil.” (Harold B.Lee, General Conference October 1973)
      1. Depending on the enormity of something, the deviation you take can thoroughly destroy you.
    2. “sexual sin—the illicit sexual relations of men and women—stands, in its enormity, next to murder. The Lord has drawn no essential distinctions between fornication, adultery, and harlotry or prostitution. Each has fallen under his solemn and awful condemnation. … [Such cannot] … escape the punishments and the judgments which the Lord has declared against this sin. The day of reckoning will come just as certainly as night follows day.” (Spencer W. Kimball, General Conference April 1971)
      1. As said before depending on the enormity of something it can destroy you. Some things that stand at that level of enormity are sexual sins
  3. Scriptures
    1. And thus had they fallen into this great transgression; yea, thus had they become weak, because of their transgression, in the space of not many years. (Helaman 4:26)
      1. Entering into transgression has degrading effects on all of your attributes. You will become physically, morally, spiritually, and socially weakened by transgressing
    2. We covenant with our God, that we shall be destroyed, even as our brethren in the land northward, if we shall fall into transgression; yea, he may cast us at the feet of our enemies (Alma 46: 22)
      1. God has the ability to destroy all nations. And, if we transgress he is compelled to do so.
  4. Personal Definition

Enormity, though often used in the context of the size of something (i.e. ‘I was amazed at the enormity of the new skyscraper’) is a scale of the violation of a law.  The types of laws that are typically covered by this term are: laws of God, laws of government, natural law, and moral law. If you commit a sin of large enormity (Murder, Sexual Sin, Denying the Holy ghost) you will become weaker, and God could destroy you. I don’t want to to break a law of any enormity but I know that if I do slip up I can repent and become better for my trials.
