Ephemeral

  1. Definition
    1. 1828: Short-lived; existing or continuing for a short time only
      1. Short (Brief)
      2. Short-lived (Fleeting)
    2. For something to ephemeral it must exist for but a moment before being replaced by something else.
  2. Quotes from Prophets
    1. “Alexander the Great, king of Macedon, pupil of Aristotle, conqueror of most of the known world in his time, was one of the world’s great young leaders. After years of exercising military pomp and prowess and after extending his kingdom from Macedonia to Egypt and from Cyprus to India, he wept when there seemed to be no more world to conquer. Then, as evidence of just how ephemeral such power is, Alexander caught a fever and died at thirty-three years of age. The vast kingdom he had gained virtually died with him.” (Howard W. Hunter, General Conference, April 1986)
      1. As is illustrated here, ephemeral things are often great and all consuming at the time of their existence but that existence passes in a short moment.
  3. Scriptures
  4. Personal Definition

Typically ephemeral is used in a derogatory way. It is often a fad or a fashion. It is a passing thing, something that lacks eternal value or principles. It is of the world. I intend to invest my time and energy (my life) into things that are solid and firm, not in ephemeral things.
