Endurance

  1. Definition:
    1. 1828: A bearing or suffering; a continuing under pain or distress without resistance, or without sinking or yielding to the pressure; sufferance; patience.
      1. Continuing: persistence
      2. Sufferance: accommodation
      3. Patience: restraint
        1. Endurance is to diligently strive for something. No matter what tries to stop you. That is endurance.
  2. Quotes from Prophets:
    1. “Patient endurance is to be distinguished from merely being “acted upon.”Endurance is more than pacing up and down within the cell of our circumstance; it is not only acceptance of the things allotted to us, it is to “act for ourselves” by magnifying what is allotted to us.” (Neal A. Maxwell, General Conference, April 1990)
      1. We need to endure. But enduring is not all. We need to magnify our endurance.
    2. “There is more to endurance than just surviving and waiting for the end to overtake us. To endure to the end takes great faith. In the Garden of Gethsemane, Jesus ‘fell on his face, and prayed, saying, O my Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me: nevertheless not as I will, but as thou wilt’” (Robert E. Hales, General Conference, April 1998)
      1. Enduring is not easy. We cannot endure till the end without Christ.
  3. Scriptures:
    1. “Wherefore, ye must press forward with a steadfastness in Christ, having a perfect brightness of hope, and a love of God and of all men. Wherefore, if ye shall press forward, feasting upon the word of Christ, and endure to the end, behold, thus saith the Father: Ye shall have eternal life.” (2 Nephi 31:20)
      1. If we are steadfast (diligent) in following the commands of God and enduring till the end, then we’ll get eternal life.
  4. Personal Definition:
Endurance is being diligent in good things. You can endure adversity. Enduring is until the end. If you endure to the end, you can have eternal life.
